Marine Biomass Innovation (MBI) Project

The Marine Biomass Innovation (MBI) Project is a multi-year transdisciplinary research project funded by the federal New Frontiers Research Fund-Transformation (NFRF). MBI is a collaborative project involving researchers from nine Canadian and international universities, and five Mi’kmaw governing organizations (Flat Bay Band, Benoit First Nation, St. George’s Indian Band, Three Rivers Mi’kmaq Band, and Elmastukwek First Nation – Benoit’s Cove Indian Band). MBI seeks to apply a novel integrated approach for repurposing marine biomass to improve economic sustainability of rural coastal, remote, and Indigenous communities in two specific sub-regions of Western Newfoundland (Bay St. George and Bay of Islands).
